I totally agree with that. Social skills are the most powerful skillset on earth. Especially if you are going to be mostly in towns, tourist areas and protected areas, the worst you should run into is getting mugged and even a martial artist should just hand over their wallet in that circumstance.

If like me you're going into wilderness areas with bandits or shanty towns with gangs.... then it's more likely you'll face people you can't talk down. But I'd always try humanity first and fighting second.

The best way to stay out of trouble is actually to just be a good "people person". I mean, I don't think studying up on martial arts is a bad idea for what Drew is planning, but a good smile, some jokes, and an offer to share beer or food will usually get you out of trouble a lot better than fighting will.

Just saying.

The best recommendation I can give is to look for a traditional martial art - something that has been around for many centuries and used in battle. If it feels like a real master-apprentice relationship you're in the right place (as infuriating as that will be when you first start out). Would love to hear what direction you end up going - keep us posted?

Love this, Drew. Martial arts is something I've always said I'd try someday. Given that I'm about to embark on my own adventure and will be traveling through some potentially dangerous places, I might want to get serious about it.
